Arab American Muslim Women Writer’s Discourse towards Identity Reconstruction : A study of Mohja Kahf’s The Girl In The Tangerine Scarf

Abstract

The present study focuses on identity formation and identity re /construction in the work of Arab American Muslim Woman writer Mohja Kahf. It examines how Arab American Muslims are facing identity crisis and difficulties of situating the self especially after 9/11 attacks. The thesis starts by giving a detailed idea about what identity means from different perspectives and related to various disciplines since the nation’s shifted in meaning at the age of globalisation, hybridity and otherness. It further discusses social problems experienced by this group, mainly what women experience the problem of veiling. It also invades the world of discourse and its importance in creating the crisis as well as resolving it. Then it analysis Mohja Kahf’s novel The Girl In The Tangerine Scarf (2006) throughout which the crisis is well expressed and strategies used by the writer to re/ construct the Arab Muslim identity are exposed. While the final chapter seems to be an intruder to the study; it adds the scope of teaching women literature in the Algerian university.

تتركز هذه الدراسة أساسا على بناء الهوية كمبدأ وأزمة الهوية التي يواجهها العرب الأمريكان المسلمين القاطنين بأمريكا خاصة النسوة المسلمات كمهجة كهف. إنها تفحص الصعوبات التي تواجهها هاته الفئة خاصة بعد هجمات الحادي عشر من سبتمبر 2011. تبدأ الأطروحة بمناقشة الهوية كمصطلح نوقش كثيرا في العشرية الأخيرة من عدة جوانب خاصة في زمن العولمة ؛ تهجين الهوية واعتبار الآخرين كتهديد و خطر للذات. تتناول الأطروحة من جهة أخرى المشاكل الاجتماعية التي تتعرض إليها هذه الفئة خاصة النساء المتحجبات في أمريكا. إنها تغزو بعد ذلك عالم فن الخطابةو أهمية وسائل الإعلام في خلق هاته المشاكل و الترويج لها مع ذلك يبقى عالم الخطابة والإعلام سلاح ذو حدين إذ بإمكانه حل هذه المشاكل. و ذلك ما سيناقش في الفصل الثالث بدراسة الرواية المكتوبة من طرف مهجة كهف و التي تظهر عرضا مفصلا حول مشكلة الهوية و الاستراتيجيات التي استخدمتها الكاتبة لإعادة بناء هويتها الإسلامية العربية الأمريكية. و أخيرا في حين يبدو الفصل الرابع والأخير من هاته الأطروحة خارجا عن نطاق الدراسة إلا أنه يطمح إلى خلق جسر بين الأدب النسائي وفن التعليم في الجامعة الجزائرية. ----------------------------------------------The present study focuses on identity formation and identity re/ construction in the work of Arab American Muslim Woman writer Mohja Kahf.
