Résumé: The traditional teaching of foreign languages was mainly based on teaching the grammatical rules of the target language as a means to enable the learners to read and translate the literary texts. However, learning a foreign language is currently meant to use it as a means of communication which is based on meaning and meaning is conveyed through vocabulary. As such, vocabulary plays a significant role in the teaching/learning process of foreign languages, namely English. The lack of vocabulary not only prevents the EFL pupils from participating in the lesson or expressing themselves in writing, but also obstructs their listening and reading comprehension. In this respect, the current research assumes that pupils’ limited vocabulary is the major cause of their weak proficiency level in English. Accordingly, it tries to demonstrate the importance of vocabulary instruction in the Algerian EFL classes, particularly at the beginning level and the significant role of the vocabulary notebook to enhance pupils’ linguistic repertoire.
