VLS, .AWL ---------------------------------------------- Summary : Vocabulary is increasingly recognized as a key component of foreign language learning programmes. Accordingly, this study focuses on a particular type of vocabulary which is general academic vocabulary (tier 2) as a prerequisite for learning English for academic purposes. The need for this type of vocabulary is accentuated at the university; particularly at the undergraduate level, which demarcates the boundaries between general and advanced learning of English as a foreign language. A sample of 67 first and third year students from the English department of the University of Djillali Liabes (Algeria), took part in this study. The study relied on a mixed method approach; using two vocabulary tests; the VST and the AWLT to measure the participants’ overall vocabulary knowledge and knowledge of tier 2. Two questionnaires and a class observation also examined the attitudes and practices of these participants and their teachers. The tests’ results converged with our predictions. EFL students arrived at university with a deficit in their conversational and academic vocabulary knowledge. In contrast, the implicit learning resulting from exposure throughout the Bachelor studies did not compensate for that deficiency and could not; on its own, meet the lexical needs of the students. Yet, the results of the questionnaires revealed the awareness of students and their teachers about the importance of vocabulary and their positive attitude towards explicit vocabulary instruction, but the classroom observation did not reflect such attitude. The research then suggests the explicit teaching of Academic Vocabulary List (AWL) and Vocabulary Learning Strategies (VLS) in a separate module to address undergraduate students' limited vocabulary and lack of autonomy. Key words: vocabulary type 2, academic English, implicit learning, explicit teaching, AWL, VLS.
