The Need for Teaching Effective ESP Courses for Medical Students in Algeria: The University of Sidi Bel-Abbès as a Case Study

Abstract

The present dissertation is an initial attempt to investigate the needs of the medical learners in the use of English for specific purposes at the faculty of medicine of Sidi Bel-Abbes University. The primary purpose of the present research is to ask for implementing English in the medical fieldci and designing effective ESP courses for students who wish to pursue their high academic studies or even for their professional career. For this reason, the author decided to identify the learners’ language needs and describe the current situation of teaching ESP in the medical faculty through a questionnaire survey and a structured interview. The findings show the non-existence of real ESP courses for medical students in the field and the absence of any kind of training for the so-called ESP teachers in the faculty. The participants show also a remarkable weakness in general English competence let alone ESP. Thus, they need to develop the four skills all together ranking the interactive skills such as: listening and speaking of prior importance. Accordingly, the author presents a sample unit of a designed ESP course for medical students and recommends a number of efficient practices of successful ESP teaching referring to the role of both the teacher and the learner, and with much focus on strategies of an ESP course development. Cette thèse est une première tentative pour étudier les besoins des apprenants en médecine dans l'utilisation de l'anglais à des fins spécifiques à la faculté de médecine de l'Université de Sidi Bel Abbes. L'objectif principal de la présente enquête est de demander la mise en œuvre de l'anglais dans le domaine médical et la conception de cours ESP efficaces pour les étudiants qui souhaitent suivre leurs hautes études universitaires ou même pour leur carrière professionnelle. Pour cette raison, l'auteur a décidé d'identifier les besoins linguistiques des apprenants et de décrire la situation actuelle de l'enseignement de l'ESP dans la faculté de médecine à travers une enquête par questionnaire et une interview structurée. Les résultats montrent l'inexistence de cours ESP réels pour les étudiants en médecine sur le terrain et l'absence de toute forme de formation pour les enseignants ESP dans la faculté de médecine. Les participants montrent également une faiblesse remarquable dans la compétence en anglais général, sans parler de l'ESP. Ainsi, ils doivent développer ensemble les quatre compétences de classement des compétences interactives telles que: écouter et parler d'importance préalable. En conséquence, l'auteur présente une unité d'un cours ESP conçu pour les étudiants en médecine et recommande un certain nombre de pratiques efficaces d'enseignement ESP qui se réfèrent au rôle de l'enseignant et de l'apprenant, en mettant l'accent sur les stratégies. هذه الرسالة هي محاولة للتحقيق في احتياجات المتعلمين في مجال استخدام اللغة الإنجليزية في كلية الطب بجامعة سيدي بلعباس. الغرض الأساسي من البحث الحالي هو طلب تطبيق اللغة الإنجليزية في المجال الطبي وتصميم دورات فعالة لمقياس "الانجليزية لإغراض محددة" للطلاب الذين يرغبون في متابعة دراستهم الأكاديمية العالية أو حتى في حياتهم المهنية. لهذا السبب ، تم تحديد الاحتياجات اللغوية للمتعلمين ووصف الحالة الراهنة لتعليم هذه المادة في كلية الطب من خلال مسح استبيان ومقابلة منظمة. تظهر النتائج عدم وجود دورات حقيقية للمقياس لطلاب الطب في الميدان وغياب أي نوع من التدريب لمعلميه على مستوى الكلية. كما أظهر المشاركون ضعفًا ملحوظًا في الكفاءة فيما يخص الإنجليزية العامة. وبالتالي ، فهم بحاجة إلى تطوير المهارات الأربعة مجتمعةً خاصة التفاعلية منها مثل: الاستماع والتحدث نظرا لأهميتهما. وبناءً على ذلك ، تم تقديم وحدة عينة من دورة للمقياس السالف الذكر مصممة لطلاب الطب كما تم التوصية بعدد من الممارسات الناجحة التي تشير إلى دور كل من المعلم والمتعلم ، مع التركيز بشكل كبير على استراتيجيات تطويرها
