British Colonialism from Survival to Fulfillment The Case of the Nigerian Traditional Authorities

الاستعمار هو ظاهرة سياسية، حيث يتم تنفر سيادة الدولة والشعب تماما لصالح دولة أجنبية. هذه الأطروحة، التي تتعامل مع الاستعمار البريطاني لأكبر بلد في أفريقيا السوداء "نيجيريا"، تهدف أساسا إلى تقديم تحليل وكذلك ملخص للمشاكل الرئيسية التي أثرت على التاريخ والسياسة في العصر الاستعماري. هدفها ليس فقط تغطية جوانب كثيرة من الماضي الاستعماري ولكن أيضا استكشاف الماضي قبل الاستعمار النيجيري بالتركيز على قضاياه الكبرى التاريخية والسياسية وكذلك الاجتماعية. وبالتباع الجدول الزمني للأحداث، تسلط هذه الأطروحة الضوء على أحداث رئيسية أبرزها طبيعة السلطات التقليدية في المجتمعات النيجيرية، تخليص السكان من تجارة الرقيق، فرض الحكم الاستعماري وآثاره، ونقل السلطة للنيجيريين عام 1960. علاوة على ذلك، يركز هذا البحث على الأحداث التاريخية التي أثرت على الهياكل الاجتماعية والسياسية للسلطات أساسا على طول مجرى الحقبة الاستعمارية.

Summary Colonialism is a political phenomenon, whereby the sovereignty of a state and people are totally alienated for the benefit of a foreign power. This thesis, which deals with the British Colonialism of the largest country in black Africa “Nigeria”, is principally designed to provide an analysis as well as a summary of major problems bearing on the history and politics of the imperial era. Its objective is not only to cover many aspects of the colonial past but also to explore the Nigerian pre-colonial past focusing on its major historical, political as well as social issues. Following a timeline of events, it highlights key episodes notably the nature of the traditional authorities in the Nigerian communities, the decimation of the population from the slave trade, the imposition of colonial rule and its effects and the transfer of power to Nigerians in 1960. Furthermore, this research work focuses on the historical processes that have affected the socio-political structures of chiefly authorities along the course of the colonial era. -------------------------------------------- Résumé Le colonialisme est un phénomène politique, de sorte que la souveraineté d'un Etat et les gens sont totalement aliénés au profit d'une puissance étrangère. Cette thèse, qui porte sur le colonialisme britannique du plus grand pays d'Afrique noire le "Nigeria", est principalement conçue pour fournir une analyse ainsi qu'un résumé des principaux problèmes portant sur l'histoire et la politique de l'époque impériale. Son objectif est non seulement de couvrir de nombreux aspects du passé colonial, mais aussi d'explorer le passé précoloniale du Nigeria en concentrant sur ses grandes questions historiques, politiques ainsi que sociales. Suite à une chronologie des événements, la thèse met en évidence les principaux épisodes notamment la nature des autorités traditionnelles dans les communautés nigérianes, la décimation de la population de la traite négrière, l'imposition de la domination coloniale et ses effets ; et le transfert du pouvoir aux Nigérians en 1960. De plus, ce travail de recherche se concentre sur les processus historiques qui ont affecté les structures sociopolitiques des collectivités principalement au cours de l'ère coloniale.
